A Commercial District, Not a Residential Grid

Downtown Nampa's core along 1st Street S is a city-recognized historic district on its own, separate from the Old Nampa bungalow neighborhood a few blocks over. These are commercial buildings from 1905 to 1920 — brick storefronts with big single-pane display windows at sidewalk level and transom glass above the doors, some with upper-floor offices or apartments looking down on Indian Creek Plaza and the old Train Depot. There's no lawn, no sprinkler zone, no shrub line to catch dust before it hits the glass. Street-level display windows take splash-back straight off the sidewalk and curb — de-icer in winter, mud off boots and delivery carts, hand and nose prints from foot traffic outside the plaza. A house window fifteen feet back from the road never sees that kind of direct contact.

Franklin Traffic and a Rail Yard a Few Blocks Away

Downtown sits close to the Franklin corridor and Union Pacific's Nampa Yard, the largest rail classification yard in southwestern Idaho, moving well over 170,000 carloads a year. Awnings and the Windows Above the Shops

A lot of these storefronts still carry their awnings — metal or canvas, mounted right over the display windows — and they collect the same diesel film and soot the glass does, plus algae on the shaded side that never fully dries out. We'll clean the awning face along with the windows so the whole storefront reads clean instead of just the glass. Second-floor windows above the shops, whether they're offices or apartments, are often old sash that's never been touched — original wood in some of the oldest buildings, aluminum replacements in others. Screens on those upper units catch the same soot and pollen everyone downtown deals with; the annual screen clean that comes with a membership covers them same as any house.
