The blocks around Front Street and 1st Street South were built out long before anyone worried about gutter guards. Half of Downtown Nampa drains off flat brick parapets with no gutter on the building at all, and the other half is early-century bungalows running narrow four-inch trough under a big maple canopy.
Downtown is really two building stocks sharing one zip code. Along Front Street and 1st Street South the storefronts are flat or low-slope roofs hidden behind a brick parapet, and most of them have no gutter anywhere on the building. They drain through scuppers cut in the parapet into a conductor head and a downspout on the alley wall, or through an internal drain tied into the plumbing. Not every house downtown needs us twice a year, and we would rather say so. Two checks you can run yourself. First, put a hose in the far end of a gutter run for thirty seconds. If water leaves the downspout outlet in a steady stream and the trough only holds fine shingle grit, you can wait. Grit alone does not clog a gutter. Leaves, maple seeds and locust pods do. Second, if water pours over the front lip during a storm but the trough is visibly clean, that is not a debris problem. That is pitch, an undersized four-inch gutter, or a roof valley dumping more water at one spot than the outlet can take. Probably not in the usual sense. Most flat-roofed storefronts downtown drain through scuppers in the parapet into a conductor head and a downspout on the alley side, or through an internal drain. We clear the scupper, the head and the leader, which is where the debris actually stacks. If your roof drains internally and there is nothing exposed for us to reach, we will tell you it is a roofer's job instead of billing you.
It depends almost entirely on what is hanging over your roof. Under a mature silver maple, plan on twice a year: once in June after the seeds finish dropping and once in late fall after the leaves are down. Guards stop whole leaves, but maple samaras and honeylocust leaflets are small and dry enough to pass straight through most mesh, and then they pack in underneath where you cannot see them or reach them. Tight side yards get worked at an angle off a ladder with standoffs, or from a pole where footing is bad, and we use the alley for the back elevation and the garage.
