North End roofs are steep, cut up with dormers and valleys, and sitting under the oldest maple and elm canopy in Boise. Every valley funnels debris into a short section of gutter, so the same house can have one clean run and one packed solid twenty feet away.
The Craftsman bungalows and Foursquares here were built with steep gable roofs, often 8/12 or better, usually with a dormer or two and a lower porch roof on its own plane. That shape decides where the clog goes. Every valley on a cut-up roof works like a funnel, so leaves landing across a hundred square feet of shingle get dumped into about six feet of gutter directly below the valley outfall. That is why we so often find one section packed to the lip while the run twenty feet away is nearly clear. Same story where an upper roof drains onto a porch roof: the porch gutter takes the whole upper roof's load and it is usually the smallest run on the house. Plenty of North End homes still carry original-profile half-round gutter, and plenty more have K-style hung on spikes and ferrules driven into fifty- to hundred-year-old fascia. What we will not do is force high pressure or an auger into a buried line we cannot see the end of. On tile this old, that is how you find a collapsed section the expensive way. Not every North End house needs two cleanings a year, and we would rather tell you to wait than sell you a visit. Here is the check. During the next real rain, walk the perimeter and watch where water leaves the house. If it is coming out of the downspouts in a steady stream and nothing is sheeting over the front lip, your runs are moving. Then look up at the valley outfalls and the porch roof gutter, since those pack first. Grit and a shallow layer of composted leaf in the bottom of a gutter is normal and blocks nothing; what blocks is a matted dam sitting right at the outlet. Peeling paint or dark staining on the fascia under a joint, or a line of dirt splatter partway up the siding, means it has been overflowing whether or not you ever caught it in the act.

Spring drop. The American elms let go of samaras in March and the maples follow with keys in May. Those seeds are small, flat and wet, and they mat into a solid dam at the outlet far faster than whole leaves do. A gutter can look mostly clear from the ground and still be plugged at the drop. If you only clean once a year in North End, a late-spring visit often does more good than an early-fall one.

If yours will not drain, the usual fix is a drain contractor scoping the line, or cutting the leader and daylighting it above grade into a splash block.
Because it is doing two roofs' work. On a lot of North End bungalows the main roof drains down onto the porch roof, so the porch gutter takes the upper roof's water and debris on top of its own, and it is usually the shortest run on the house with a single downspout. It packs first and it spills first. If yours does this every year, it may need a larger outlet or a second leader, not just another cleaning.
