What Actually Fills Spurwing Gutters

Spurwing is one of the older subdivisions on this side of town, recorded 1995–1996 on one plat (about 366 acres). In most of Meridian the gutter problem is not leaves — it is grit. Architectural shingle granules shed steadily for the life of a roof and wash straight into the trough, and north Meridian's open-ground wind fetch, which still carries construction and field dust off the sections that have not been built yet adds a fine mineral silt on top of it. Together they make a dense, heavy sludge that sits in the low end of the run and does not flush. Where there are mature trees, cottonwood fluff and seed pods pack the downspout outlets on top of that. We hand-clear the trough rather than blowing it, bag the debris, then flush each downspout and confirm it runs. On Spurwing lots that water comes off Eureka Water Company's pressurized line, which is why the problem shows up street-wide rather than house by house.

Downspouts Are Where It Actually Fails

A gutter full of grit still mostly works. A plugged downspout does not — it backs water up the trough, over the front lip and down the fascia, and that is where the damage starts. On Meridian builds the outlets are commonly the restriction point, especially anywhere a two-story run drops into a single stack. We flush every downspout and watch it discharge. If one will not clear, we tell you where the blockage is rather than declaring the job done. On a home this age the fasteners are worth a look too — thirty-year-old spikes back out of the fascia and let the trough pitch away from the outlet. It is the single most common thing we get called about in Spurwing.

Tiger Striping, and What It Means

Those vertical dark streaks down the face of the gutter are not dirt running off the roof. They are the bituminous binder washing out of the shingles and bonding to the gutter coating, and they will not come off with a rinse. They take a dedicated gutter-brightening detergent and hand agitation, which is a separate service from clearing the trough. The Honest Limits
