Why You Should Clean Your Gutters Before Idaho Winter

Gutter cleaning is the home chore everyone puts off — until a winter storm turns clogged gutters into a very expensive problem. The quick answer: clean them in late fall

The best time to clean your gutters in Idaho is late fall — after most leaves have dropped but before the first hard freeze, usually October to mid-November. That clears out the season's debris so melting snow can actually drain instead of pooling and freezing.

Why clogged gutters are so dangerous in winter

Idaho winters don't just snow — they freeze, thaw, and freeze again. That cycle is what makes blocked gutters destructive:

• Ice dams. When gutters are clogged, snowmelt has nowhere to go. It refreezes at the roof edge, builds into an ice dam, and forces water up under your shingles — where it leaks into the attic, ceilings, and walls.
• Foundation damage. Overflowing gutters dump water right against your foundation. In freezing temps that water expands, and over a winter it can crack the foundation, flood a basement or crawlspace, and erode landscaping.
• Gutter and fascia damage. The sheer weight of trapped debris, water, and ice can pull gutters loose from the house and rot the fascia board behind them.

Your fall home-prep timeline

1. Early–mid fall: book your gutter cleaning (spots fill fast once the leaves drop and everyone remembers at once).
2. After the leaves are down: get gutters and downspouts fully cleared and flushed so you know they actually drain.
3. Same visit: it's the perfect time to knock out fall window cleaning too — clear glass makes the low winter sun (and holiday photos) look incredible.

Should you DIY it?

If you have a single-story home and you're comfortable and safe on a ladder, gutter cleaning is doable yourself.
