What rain actually does to clean glass

Rain forms as condensed vapor, so it starts out close to distilled, nothing like the tap water that leaves white dots when it dries on a window. Falling onto a genuinely clean pane, it dries clean. The trouble is what it collects on the way down and what it sheets over once it lands. Airborne dust, pollen, smoke particulate, and whatever has been sitting on the roof and the frames all get carried onto the glass. A clean window has almost nothing above it to donate. A dirty window has a season of grit packed in the top track and along the sash, and the first real rain drags every bit of it down the pane in streaks. That is why the same storm leaves one house spotted and the house next door fine. Rain does not ruin clean windows. It exposes dirty ones.

Where the spots actually come from after a storm

Walk the house after it clears and the pattern tells you the source. Vertical streaks starting at the top of the pane are frame and track dirt washed down as the water sheeted off. A dirty band across the upper third usually means roof runoff came over a stretch with no gutter, or over a gutter that is packed and overflowing at that corner. Fine even speckle across the whole pane is airborne dust, common here when a front kicks up the valley ahead of the rain after a dry stretch. Hard white dots low on the glass in a fan or arc pattern are almost never rain. That is sprinkler overspray, and valley water carries enough calcium and magnesium that every drop leaves mineral behind. Screens count too. Water pushing through a dirty screen picks up that dirt and prints it on the glass behind.

Should you clean before the rain or wait it out?

Book the work. Waiting for a clear ten-day forecast in the Treasure Valley means giving up most of spring to protect against something that mostly does not happen. Two exceptions are worth respecting. If a real storm is forecast for tomorrow and the job is optional this week, moving it a day costs you nothing. And if your gutters are packed, get those cleared first or at the same time, because a full gutter guarantees dirty water over the glass with the next rain. As for cleaning during rain, exterior work in light drizzle is normal and the result holds, since the last water on the glass is our deionized rinse and not weather. Work stops for lightning, hail, or wind strong enough to make a ladder or a pole unsafe. Interior cleaning is unaffected either way.

Fourth, the exclusions, stated before you book. Sprinkler overspray, etched hard water, construction mud, and storm damage are not rain spotting, and a guarantee that quietly implies otherwise is either vague or unfunded. Fifth, it should be written on the estimate or the invoice, not just said at the door. A guarantee you cannot point to later is a sentence, not a policy.
