It lands flat over a downspout outlet and seals it like a lid. Honey locust is the opposite problem: the leaflets are small enough to ride straight through most screens and then pack solid in the first elbow. Elm samaras come down in April and May and mat into a wet felt. Then in late May and June the cottonwoods along Julia Davis and the Greenbelt push seed fluff across the south end of downtown, and fluff mixed with street dust turns into a gray paste a blower will not move. That mix is why a single fall date does not cover a downtown roof the way it does out in a new subdivision.
There is no lawn to foot a ladder on. Downtown downspouts land on sidewalk, in an alley, or in a four-foot gap between two buildings, and most end in a boot that disappears into a buried line under the walk. We flush every downspout from the top once the trough is clear. If it backs up at the boot, the blockage is in that buried run, and we will say so and disconnect at the elbow rather than pretend we can clear a hundred-year-old line under a public sidewalk. Alley-side downspouts are the other repeat offender, dented or torn loose where a dumpster or a delivery truck caught them. We set and foot ladders on the sidewalk or in the alley and work around foot traffic, so tell us the address, whether the alley gate is locked, and when pickup runs.
Go out in a steady rain and watch one downspout. If it runs a full stream within a couple of minutes of the roof getting wet, that side is flowing and can wait a season. From the sidewalk, look at the top lip of the trough: visible clean metal means there is not much sitting in there. What needs attention regardless of flow is anything growing out of the gutter, a sag between hangers, and a dark stain on the brick or the ceiling below. It depends on how the roof drains. If there is a built-in box gutter behind the cornice feeding a downspout on the face, yes, that is our work and we clear it by hand. If it is a membrane roof draining through internal leaders or a scupper straight off the parapet, that is a roofer's job. We will tell you which one you have over the phone rather than book a visit we cannot help with.
Two dates beat one here. Late November, after the sycamore and plane leaves finish, since those hang on well past the first frost. Then a pass in June if you are on the south end near Julia Davis or the Greenbelt, once the cottonwood fluff is down.
