What Grows and Settles on Broken Horn Siding

Exteriors here collect three separate things. On north and east elevations, where sun never fully dries the wall, you get algae and mildew as a green-black film. Along the bottom three feet you get mud splash and irrigation overspray staining — the same mineral that marks the glass marks the siding, and on light vinyl it reads as a permanent dingy band. Everywhere else you get decomposed granite off the foothills, plus the winter inversion that traps particulate at ground level for weeks at a time. Each needs different treatment, which is why one pass with a pressure wand does a poor job on all three. We see it most consistently on the homes along W Red Poll Dr.

Soft Wash, Not Pressure

House washing is a chemical process, not a force one. We apply a surfactant and sodium-hypochlorite blend at low pressure, give it dwell time to kill the growth at the root, and rinse. High pressure drives water up behind lap joints and into the wall assembly, strips the chalking layer off aging vinyl, and on stucco and manufactured stone it will take the finish off outright. Soft washing kills the algae rather than knocking the top off it, which is why it stays gone longer. We pre-wet and rinse every bed on the wash path. Being this close to Beacon Light means the road-facing elevation is always the one that needs the most attention.

The Boise Variable

Two things drive this in Boise: untreated irrigation water off the canal system, and decomposed granite off the foothills, plus the winter inversion that traps particulate at ground level for weeks at a time. Separately each is manageable. Together they bond, and that is the condition we are actually treating on a Broken Horn job. Where We Stop

Soft washing removes organic growth and dirt. It will not fix oxidised vinyl, it will not pull efflorescence out of masonry, and it does not repaint anything.
