Almost always irrigation mineral — untreated canal water throwing onto stone and stucco and drying as a gritty tan band. It comes off, and the lasting fix is adjusting the heads, otherwise the same band returns each season.
It is the safe option — that is the point of it. Soft-washing uses low pressure and lets the solution do the work, so nothing is driven behind a lap or into stucco. What is not safe is a pressure wand on siding, which forces water behind the surface where it swells hardboard and rots sheathing out of sight.
Kill it. Green and black growth on a shaded wall has a root structure in the surface, so blasting the visible layer off means it returns within weeks from what is left. The soft-wash solution treats the growth itself, which is why it stays clean for a season rather than a fortnight.
