Ten Mile Road is the spine of new Kuna. It runs from the I-84 Exit 42 interchange straight south through Columbia, Hubbard, Ardell and Deer Flat, and nearly every subdivision that has opened in the last decade sits within a half mile of it. That also makes it the dirtiest glass in the city, for three reasons that stack on top of each other rather than taking turns.
Most Kuna streets deal with one problem at a time. Ten Mile deals with three at once. First, it is the main truck route for every subdivision under construction between Columbia and Deer Flat, so there is a constant film of fine construction dust that settles on west- and east-facing glass within a day of being cleaned. Second, the fields still farmed on the west side throw dust during cutting and harvest, which is a coarser, grittier particle than construction fines and scratches if you dry-wipe it. Third, every one of these subdivisions is on pressurized canal irrigation from the Boise-Kuna Irrigation District, so the sprinklers are laying mineral on top of the dust twice a week all summer. The Ada County Highway District has been rebuilding the Ten Mile and Deer Flat intersection into a roundabout, and the homes closest to that work have taken on a dust load they did not have before. Roundabout construction means graded earth sitting open for months, staging areas, and traffic slowing and accelerating instead of holding one speed, which keeps more particulate airborne longer. If you are in Fossil Creek or on the south end of the corridor and your windows have gone from acceptable to gritty over the last couple of seasons, that is why, and it is temporary. Going north to south off Ten Mile you hit Silver Trail off West Mason Creek Street, Thunder Rock west toward Black Cat, Arroyo Vista just north of Ardell, Crimson Point and its newest Ruby Creek phase off Shayla Avenue, Silver Falls off Placerville Street, and Fossil Creek at the southwest corner of Ten Mile and Deer Flat. That is a twenty-five year spread of construction dates on one road, which matters more than it sounds. A 2003 Crimson Point home has two decades of baked-in canal mineral on the glass. A 2024 Fossil Creek home has almost none of that but still carries factory labels, stucco splatter and concrete haze from the build. Same street, opposite jobs.
Roughly half the homes on this corridor are inside their first five years, and a first clean on a new build is not a maintenance clean. There is mortar and stucco splatter, drywall mud, sticker adhesive, and often a haze of fine concrete dust that has already started to etch if it sat through a summer. Three sources stack here instead of alternating: construction dust from the subdivisions still building along the corridor, agricultural dust off the fields on the west side during cutting and harvest, and canal-irrigation overspray laying mineral over both.
