Do Solar Panels Need Cleaning? What High-Desert Dust Costs You in Output

Read your monitoring data before you book anyone

A production drop has more than one cause, and the shape of the drop tells you which one you have. Soiling comes on slowly. It shows up as a proportional haircut across every string at once, worst around solar noon when the array should be making the most, and it recovers partly after a real rain. An equipment fault looks different: a step change on one date, often confined to a single string or a handful of panel-level optimizers, with the rest of the array unchanged. Shading reads as a notch cut into the same part of the curve every day, as a tree or a vent throws the same shadow. Seasonal decline is not a fault at all, just a lower sun angle and shorter days. Pull twelve months of daily data, compare this week against the same week last year, and look at per-panel output if your system reports it. If one panel is flat and the rest are fine, that is not dust.

What high-desert dust actually does to output

Dust does not block light evenly. A fine, even film scatters and absorbs part of what hits the glass, and output falls roughly in proportion to how much light never makes it to the cells. Published soiling research puts typical annual losses across much of the country in the low single digits, with dry regions that go months between rains running meaningfully higher. The Treasure Valley has every condition that pushes it up: a long rain-free summer, ag dust off surrounding fields, gravel roads, construction, spring pollen, and late-summer smoke that settles as fine ash. The worse problem is uneven soiling. Dirt collects in a band along the bottom frame lip where runoff pools and evaporates, and because cells are wired in series, a dirty row of cells drags on the string rather than only on itself. Bird droppings do the same thing over a smaller footprint. That is why a panel that looks only mildly dirty can cost more production than the film alone would explain.

How often panels here actually need cleaning

There is no universal interval, but there are useful rules. Tilt and rain do most of the work: a roof array pitched past roughly ten degrees sheds a good share of its own dust when a real rain falls, which is why most residential arrays in the valley do fine on one cleaning a year. Time it for the end of the dry season, after smoke season and before the low winter sun makes every kilowatt-hour harder to get. Twice a year makes sense for a specific list: near-flat mounts where water sits instead of running off, ground mounts inside sprinkler range, homes on a gravel road or beside a working field, anything downwind of active construction, and arrays under trees that drop sap and attract birds. Everyone else should let the monitoring data decide. If output climbs back after a heavy rain and stays there, dust is not your problem yet.

Do the math, then vet the quote

Run the number before you book anything. Take your annual production in kilowatt-hours, multiply by the rate you pay or get credited, then multiply by the percentage you believe you are losing. That is a year of soiling in dollars. An array making 9,000 kWh a year and losing 4% is down about 360 kWh, which at residential rates is a modest number, not a dramatic one. Cleaning earns its price when the loss is genuinely heavy, when panels have gone years untouched, or when a lease, PPA, or warranty ties terms to maintenance. It does not when you are chasing a 2% seasonal wobble. If the math says yes, three questions sort the quotes: what water do you use and what does it read on a meter, do you work from a pole or walk on the roof, and are you insured for roof work. Vague answers are answers too.

How panels should be cleaned, and what damages them

Panel glass is not window glass, but the residue rules carry over, and the anti-reflective coating on the surface punishes shortcuts. Soap leaves a film. That film is faintly tacky, it holds the next round of dust, and on a surface whose entire job is passing light it is a bad trade. Tap water is worse. It dries and leaves the same mineral spotting this valley bakes onto windows, and that haze does not rinse off later. Deionized water solves both, because there is nothing in it to leave behind. The rest is restraint. No pressure washer, which can drive water past frame seals and scour coating. No abrasive pads, no scrapers, no household chemicals. Nobody standing on the panels, ever, because microcracked cells do not announce themselves until production does. And no cold water on hot glass at midday, which is why panels get cleaned early or late in the day.
