What the Water Leaves on Eaglesons Ustick Glass

Ask anyone in Boise why their windows spot and the honest answer is the sprinklers. the New York Canal system and the Boise Project supplies untreated canal water to the irrigation line, and it is carrying both silt and dissolved mineral. On glass that dries into a ring you can see in low sun and feel with a fingernail. The culinary side does not help either — treated river and well water that is hard by any standard, which is why fixtures here scale even where sprinklers never reach the glass — so rinsing with a hose adds mineral rather than removing it. Pure water with no soap is the only method that takes the deposit off instead of smearing it and leaving a tacky film for the next cycle to stick to.

Older Glass Needs a Gentler Hand

Foothills Grit and the Winter Inversion

Boise glass carries something the rest of the valley does not: foothills grit. Decomposed granite off the slope is sharp and fine, it travels on the afternoon downslope wind, and in winter the valley inversion holds everything else down at ground level with it. Two things make Boise different from the cities west of it. The first is the foothills: decomposed granite is a sharp, fine grit, and on a downslope wind it reaches glass that no farm dust ever would. It is the reason we are careful about dry-wiping anything in the Bench and foothills neighborhoods — grit plus a dry cloth is how glass gets scratched. The second is the inversion. For weeks each winter the valley lid holds particulate at ground level, and it settles as a fine grey film that is not dirt in the ordinary sense and does not rinse off in a rain. Winter is genuinely a good time to have Boise glass cleaned, because the low sun angle shows every bit of it and because pure water does not freeze on the pane at the temperatures we will work in.

Height, Ladders and Poles

Homes here carry tall glass packages — two-story great-room windows, stairwell glass and wide sliders, usually concentrated on the back elevation where no step ladder reaches. We clean that from the ground with carbon-fiber water-fed poles wherever the elevation allows. Poles keep ladder feet off finished landscaping, out of window wells and off the roofline, and they let us rinse with pure water at height rather than wiping with whatever is on the cloth. Where a pole cannot do a clean job we ladder it properly. Both crews are fully insured.

The Other Half of the Problem

Mineral is the half people notice. The other half is decomposed granite off the foothills, plus the winter inversion that traps particulate at ground level for weeks at a time. Dust on its own rinses off. Dust that lands on a pane still damp from a sprinkler cycle does not — it beds into the mineral film and cements there, which is the real reason glass here goes from clean to visibly dirty faster than people expect. Soap makes it worse, because surfactant residue in the corners is tacky and collects the next round. We introduce no soap, so there is nothing left to catch it.
