Fog, inversion, and the film they leave

Persistent winter fog means moisture is constantly condensing on and evaporating off glass, and whatever is suspended in the air gets left behind each cycle. Combined with the inversion holding particulate near the ground, that produces a dull film that builds slowly over months without any weather event to explain it.
