Architectural shingle granules shed steadily for the life of a roof and wash straight into the trough, and the west-side farm ground along Black Cat and McDermott, which throws field dust east across these roofs every time it is disked or cut adds a fine mineral silt on top of it. Downspouts Are Where It Actually Fails

A gutter full of grit still mostly works. A plugged downspout does not — it backs water up the trough, over the front lip and down the fascia, and that is where the damage starts. On Meridian builds the outlets are commonly the restriction point, especially anywhere a two-story run drops into a single stack. We flush every downspout and watch it discharge. If one will not clear, we tell you where the blockage is rather than declaring the job done. On a home this age, we also check that the buried drain line the builder ran out to the street has not silted shut, because a downspout that discharges into a plugged buried line looks fine from the roof and still floods the foundation.
