Boise is the only valley city with a real urban canopy over it, and that canopy ends up in your gutters. Silver maple keys in May, cottonwood fluff off the Greenbelt in June, and an October leaf load that century-old North End gutters were never sized to carry.
The rest of the valley deals with farm-field silt. Boise deals with trees. Elm samaras come off the American elms in March and pack the first six inches of every trough. Black cottonwood along the Boise River corridor throws fluff for two to three weeks in late May and June, and that fluff mats into a felt layer water sits on instead of running through. Then October dumps the real load from the maples, sycamores and honeylocust shading the North End, East End and the Bench. Underneath all of it sits the heavy stuff nobody thinks about: shingle granules, decomposed granite grit washed down out of Hulls Gulch and Cottonwood Creek, and August wildfire ash that turns to sludge with the first honest fall rain.
The bungalows, foursquares and Tudors through the North End, East End and Hyde Park were built between roughly 1905 and 1935, and plenty of them still run original half-round gutters or a narrow four-inch K-style. Those troughs hold about half what a modern five- or six-inch carries, they hang off painted wood fascia that does not appreciate a ladder leaned into it, and they feed round outlets that plug with two maple keys and a wad of samaras. Add steep bungalow valleys funneling an entire roof plane into one corner, and mature landscaping you have to set a ladder over to reach the second story. Warm Springs Avenue and Harrison Boulevard are the same job at a bigger scale. It comes out by hand and into bags, never blown across the roof or hit with a pressure washer.
Bench ranches through Depot Bench, Morris Hill, Vista and Hillcrest sit under 3:12 roofs with short eaves, so a plugged gutter does not politely overflow into the yard. It dumps straight down onto lap siding and into planting beds a foot off the foundation. West Bench tract houses in Collister, Veterans Park and West Valley run K-style aluminum with downspouts tied into buried drain lines that silt up at the first elbow. Out in Barber Valley, Harris Ranch and Bown Crossing the houses are new but the lots are tight: alley-loaded garages, narrow side yards, two-story great-room walls, and unshaded south roof planes carrying solar that cottonwood fluff blankets every June. Different houses, same failure point almost every time, and it is the outlet rather than the trough.
Here is a check that costs nothing. Next time it rains, go stand at your downspouts. If water is leaving the bottom of every one, your gutters are working no matter how much debris you can see from the ground. Leaves in the trough are not the problem; a plugged outlet is. If a downspout stays silent while water sheets over the front lip, that section is blocked at the outlet. If water is dripping behind the gutter onto the fascia, the trough is packed and backing up under the drip edge, and that one is worth fixing before winter, because a shaded Boise eave is exactly where ice dams start. Other tells: mud splash up the siding, one soggy corner of planting bed, staining down the fascia, or anything green growing up out of the gutter.
The fall pass is the one that matters, and the common mistake is booking it too early. The maples over the North End and the Bench are not finished until early-to-mid November, so a mid-October cleaning usually means paying for a second one. If you are near the river, meaning Barber Valley, Bown Crossing or anywhere along the Greenbelt, a late-June pass after the cottonwood stops is worth it, because fluff mats worse than leaves do. And if you are honest with yourself: a 2015 house in Columbia Village or Southeast Boise with nothing taller than the roofline does not need this twice a year. Once each fall, or every other year with a look in between, is the right answer. We would rather say that on the phone than sell you a visit you do not need.

It depends entirely on what is over your roof. Under the mature maples and elms of the North End, East End or Hyde Park, twice a year is realistic: once in late June after cottonwood fluff, once in November after the leaves finish. On a newer, mostly treeless lot in Columbia Village or Southwest Boise, once each fall is plenty, and some houses genuinely only need a look every other year.
Early-to-mid November for most of Boise. The big silver maples, sycamores and honeylocust over the older neighborhoods hold their leaves later than people expect, so a mid-October cleaning usually turns into a second one before the first hard freeze. If you only want to do it once, wait until the canopy is bare. Reserve the slot in October and take the November date.
Not in Boise. Mesh and screen guards keep whole maple leaves out of the trough, but cottonwood fluff, elm samaras, maple keys and shingle grit mat on top of the guard and form a lid that water runs straight over instead of through. Guarded gutters still need the top surface cleared, the outlets checked and the downspouts flushed. Less often than open gutters, not never.
