Lots here are close together, and most downspouts run down the side yard between two houses — six to eight feet of gravel or bark with a fence on one side and sprinkler heads on the other. Plenty of homes have the downspout tied into a buried drain that carries water out to the curb or a swale, and that buried line is the part that actually fails. Grit settles in the elbow at the bottom, and the first hard rain backs water up the downspout and out a seam.
