What Is Actually In The Water Hitting Your Windows

Star's newer subdivisions are served by pressurized irrigation — untreated canal water piped through a district system, turned on around mid-April and shut off in mid-October. It is not softened and it is not filtered. It carries dissolved calcium and magnesium along with suspended canal silt. Every drop that lands on a window and dries in the sun leaves behind everything it was carrying. On a 95-degree July afternoon that water evaporates off south-facing glass in a couple of minutes, which is the worst case: no time to run off, all of the mineral left sitting on the surface. That is a different problem than a rain spot or a dusty window. It is a mineral deposit bonded to the glass, and soap and a squeegee will not touch it.

Subdivision Age Decides How Bad It Gets

Etching severity in Star is mostly decided the year the sprinklers went in. When a whole neighborhood is landscaped to one builder's spec, every front yard gets heads in roughly the same corner throwing the same direction — so the damage shows up in the same spot on house after house down the street. Rosti Farms is newer ground on Star's west side, which means small lots and short setbacks: heads sit a few feet off the foundation instead of out in the middle of an acre lawn like Star's older county parcels. Short throw at close range puts water directly on glass rather than letting it fall as mist. Which Elevations Take The Overspray

The pattern is predictable once you know where the heads are. Ground-floor windows facing the lawn take the most — the front elevation over the strip between sidewalk and house, and side-yard windows in the narrow gap between homes where a head sits a few feet away and the spray wraps the corner. Second-story glass is usually clean unless a large rotor is throwing high or an afternoon breeze carries mist up the wall. Stone or brick wainscot, the bottom two feet of the garage door, and light vinyl siding at the base all pick up the same tan silt-and-mineral film on the same schedule. What Comes Off And What Does Not

There are two stages and they are not the same job. Stage one is topical scale — mineral sitting on top of the glass. That comes off with the right acid-based restoration compound and hand work, and the window ends up genuinely clear. Stage two is etching, where the mineral has leached silica out of the glass surface and left pits. That is damage to the glass itself. Polishing reduces the haze but does not always erase it, and badly etched panes sometimes need replacement. Glass sprayed through three or more irrigation seasons untreated is often partly into stage two on the worst pane. Keeping It From Rebuilding
