This is the most common cause of spotting on a new foothills house. Heads are set wide to cover ground that has not grown in yet, so they are hitting ground-floor glass and stucco with untreated canal water several times a week. On new glass that film is entirely removable — for a while. Left through two or three summers of baking sun it etches, and then it is permanent on windows that came with the house.
Two things land on foothills glass: dissolved mineral from untreated irrigation, and sharp decomposed-granite grit. Individually each is manageable. Together they are how windows get permanently damaged, because anyone wiping a mineral-filmed pane that also carries granite grit is dragging an abrasive across glass under pressure. That is the origin of most of the fine hairline scratching we find on houses up here — not vandalism or bad glass, just the wrong cleaning method applied to the wrong dust.
This distinction decides whether the problem is fixable. A deposit sits on top of the glass: mineral left behind when hard water dried there, and it comes off. Etching is different — the mineral has chemically bitten into the glass surface, usually after years of sprinkler overspray baking in sun, and the damage is in the glass rather than on it.
