Deposit sits on top of the glass. Etching is glass that is gone. Two tests separate them and neither needs a chemical. First, the fingernail. Drag a nail sideways across the worst spotting. Scale has texture, a faint grit or a raised ring edge your nail stutters over. Etching is dead smooth, because the surface has been eaten level. Second, the wet test, and this is the one that decides it. Flood the pane with a hose and look at it while water is still running down it, not while it dries. Water fills the microscopic texture of a surface deposit so it stops scattering light, and the spotting fades or vanishes outright, then reappears as it dries. Etching may soften slightly when wet, but it never disappears, because there is nothing sitting on the glass for water to fill. Vanishes wet, returns dry, catches a nail: removable. Unchanged wet, glass-smooth: permanent.

Find the surface first, and rule out the four impostors

Before you test anything, find which face the mark is on. Touch a pencil tip to the glass and look at the gap between the tip and its reflection. No gap means the mark is on your side; a visible gap means it is on the far face. If you cannot reach it from either side, it is not a stain at all. It is a failed insulated unit, moisture sealed between the panes, usually worst on cold mornings and thinning by afternoon. Three more impostors get called hard water. Low-E or self-cleaning coatings can sit on an exposed face and aftermarket tint film lives on the interior face; acid and polishing wreck both and leave patchy haze that mimics etching. Why glass etches: the pH switch that turns deposit into damage

Can etched glass be restored, or is it permanent?

Etching is corrosion in the glass itself, so no cleaning product removes it. Early, light etching can sometimes be reduced by polishing with cerium oxide, which abrades a few microns off the surface, but it is slow, it can introduce faint optical distortion, and it often does not finish perfectly clear.
