Screen mesh is a filter, and here it filters irrigation. Silt carried in sprinkler overspray dries in the weave, and because the mesh is rough it holds far more of it than the glass does. Add river-bottom and foothills dust, plus the construction dust that comes with a city still building out its north and west edges and pollen and within a season the screen carries a grey load you can see through a freshly cleaned window.
