Clean a screen when the mesh is whole, still flexible, and the frame is square. Replace it when the mesh is torn, creased, brittle, or crusted with mineral scale, because no cleaning method reverses any of those four. Sorting a whole house takes about five minutes per screen and a tape measure.
Cleaning earns its money when the only problem is material sitting on top of intact mesh. Dust, pollen, cottonwood fluff, wildfire ash, spiderweb, pet hair, road silt. This is the part that costs us money to say plainly. Cleaning does not close a tear. It does not pull a crease out of aluminum mesh, because that metal has already yielded and will hold the fold forever. It does not stop chalked aluminum from hazing gray again inside a season, since the surface keeps regenerating oxide. It does not lift paint overspray or stucco splatter, which cure into the weave. It does not un-embrittle fiberglass that has spent nine summers on a west wall. And it does not remove bonded mineral scale: the acid strength and scrubbing that would move it strips the PVC coating off the strands and costs more screen life than the deposit does. Turning that head fifteen degrees costs nothing and outperforms every product in this guide. Never pressure wash a screen. Even a 1,500 PSI tip will blow mesh out of the spline groove or shred fiberglass outright, and standing farther back does not make it a good idea. Lay them flat on grass or a tarp, never leaned against brick where a gust folds the frame. Soft-bristle brush, mild soap or plain deionized water, then rinse with a fan nozzle at ordinary hose pressure, 40 to 60 PSI, from about eighteen inches back. Do not do this below 40°F, when vinyl spline stiffens and pops the groove. Dry fully before reinstalling, or you trap moisture against the sash. Once a year is plenty, since most screen damage happens during removal and reinstallation, not from dirt.

Charcoal mesh looks darker from outside but gives better outward visibility than silver.
Usually not in any way worth doing. Mineral scale bonds into the weave, and the acid strength plus scrubbing needed to dissolve it strips the PVC coating off the mesh, which shortens the screen's life more than the staining does. The better fix is upstream: adjust the sprinkler head that is hitting it. Once the mesh is visibly crusted and stiff, replacement is the honest answer, not another cleaning.
Once a year handles most Treasure Valley homes, ideally after cottonwood season ends in late June. Go twice a year if you sit on a gravel road, back up to a field, or live downwind of active construction. More often than that does not extend screen life and adds handling risk, since screens get damaged coming out of and going back into the track far more often than by dirt.
