Glass railings streak worse than windows for one reason: they are backlit and visible from both sides at once, so every flaw shows. The method is a full grit rinse first, both faces in the same session, and a mineral-free final rinse. Scratches come from skipping step one.
Do it in this order and streaks mostly stop happening. Rinse both faces top to bottom with plain water before anything touches the glass, because deck railings sit in the splash zone and carry sand. Clean the top cap and the base channel next, so nothing drips onto finished glass later. Then wash one panel at a time with a clean sleeve, squeegee and detail both faces before moving on, and make the last contact mineral-free water so nothing dries into a line. Both faces in the same session is not optional. A dirty inside face reads as haze on the outside face, and you will chase a streak that lives on the other side of the glass for twenty minutes. Forty linear feet of 42-inch panel is about 280 square feet of surface once you count both sides, and done properly it takes 30 to 45 minutes.
A window is a dark rectangle set in a wall. You read it against an interior dimmer than the sky, and the frame gives your eye an edge to stop at. A glass guard has none of that. You look through it at a bright yard or a valley view from three or four feet away, and light comes through at a low angle that lights up every bit of film like a projector. Frameless panels have no sightline break at all, and the edges are polished, so a smear that runs off the edge has nowhere to hide. Then there is contact. Palms, forearms, sunscreen, dog noses at 30 inches, and grill smoke that settles as a fine oily haze on whichever face is nearest the cook. That oil does not come off with water alone, and it is the most common reason a railing looks worse right after cleaning than it did before.
Almost every scratched glass railing we see was scratched by its owner with a dry or half-dry cloth. Railing glass sits 6 to 42 inches off a deck, right in the splash line, collecting hard silica sand off the boards and out of the landscaping. Wipe that dry and you have made sandpaper. The rinse is not a nicety, it is the entire scratch-prevention step. Two more things to know. Tempered glass, which code requires in a guard, carries fabricating debris fused into the surface during tempering, and a razor or scraper can drag those particles into permanent trails. The industry standard covering this, IWCA I-14.1, exists because of exactly that failure. And if your panels are laminated, the interlayer is exposed at the polished edge. Ammonia, acetone and alcohol-heavy sprays left sitting on that edge start a milky delamination halo that creeps inward and never reverses.
Water runs down, so clean down. Start with the top cap or handrail including its underside, where a wet sleeve will otherwise drip a dirty line across a panel you already finished. Then the base. A shoe-mounted panel sits in an aluminum U-channel packed with gasket, and that channel fills with grit, pine needles and standing water. Skip it and it wicks a brown line back up the glass within a week, which reads to the homeowner as bad squeegee work. Flush it, run the gasket line, dry the joint. Spigot and standoff mounts are simpler, but stainless is not stainless forever: 316 spigots near a hot tub or in a wet corner develop tea staining, a brown surface bloom that looks like rust. Do not attack it with bleach or steel wool, which makes it permanent. And keep a pressure washer off the panel edges entirely.
Most valley yards run on pressurized irrigation off the canal system rather than city tap, and that water is a different animal. It carries suspended ditch silt plus a heavier dissolved mineral load, so a head that clips the deck is depositing both the grit that scratches and the calcium that spots, several times a week all summer. Watch a railing for a season and you can usually see the arc of the head printed on the glass. That deposit stays soft for the first few months. Left through a couple of summers under valley sun it reacts into the surface and etches, and at that point no cleaner and no polish brings it back at a sensible price. Rotating the offending head ten degrees costs nothing and does more than any service you can buy. May adds cottonwood fluff and pollen, which lands on wet glass and sets like paste.

It drives grit and water under the base gasket, strips sealant at the shoe, and if the wand catches an exposed panel edge it can chip tempered glass. Tempered is under tension, and an edge chip can put a panel on a countdown to failure.
