Why Tempered Glass Scratches During Window Cleaning, and the Check That Prevents It

Tempered glass is not harder than ordinary glass. It is the same soda-lime glass at the same hardness. What scratches it is fabricating debris: microscopic particles fused to the surface inside the tempering furnace. A blade catches one, drags it, and cuts a line. The check is a test scrape before the first full pass.

Tempering changes strength, not hardness

Tempered glass starts as ordinary annealed float glass. It gets cut to final size, heated to roughly 1,150°F, then hit with high-pressure air that chills the outer skin far faster than the core. The surfaces end up locked in compression — ASTM C1048 requires at least 10,000 psi for fully tempered — while the middle stays in tension. That is why it is four to five times stronger in bending and why it crumbles into pebbles instead of daggers. None of that touches hardness. It leaves the furnace as the same soda-lime chemistry it went in with, around 5.5 on the Mohs scale, and a steel edge or a trapped quartz grain does not care that the pane is prestressed. Strength resists breaking. Hardness resists scratching. Tempering buys the first and none of the second, and most scratch complaints trace straight back to someone assuming otherwise.

Fabricating debris is what actually cuts the line

Inside the furnace the glass rides on ceramic rollers at a temperature where its surface is slightly soft. Those rollers pick up glass fines and ceramic dust, and the particles press into the softened underside and stay — welded on, partially embedded, standing a few microns proud of an otherwise flat surface. In raking light they read as faint specks or a hazy band running the length of the pane. A fingernail dragged slowly across catches on them. Now put a razor on that surface. The blade meets a hard nib it cannot ride over, pops it free, and carries it forward. The particle does the cutting, not the blade. That is why a fab-debris scratch is one continuous line exactly as long as the stroke, and why the identical blade on the opposite face of the same pane often leaves nothing at all.

Three ways to know you are looking at tempered glass

First, find the bug: the small permanently etched or sandblasted stamp in a corner carrying the fabricator's name and a standard reference. Federal safety glazing rules under 16 CFR 1201 require it, so on residential glass it is nearly always present, though it can hide under the frame or face the wrong way. Second, if the stamp is unreadable, put on polarized sunglasses and view the pane at an angle in daylight. Heat-treated glass shows a repeating pattern of dark blotches or bands — quench marks and roller wave. Annealed glass shows nothing. Third, use the building code as a map. Residential code requires safety glazing in doors, in sidelites within 24 inches of a door edge, within 60 inches of a tub or shower floor, alongside stairs and landings, and in large panels with a bottom edge under 18 inches. Treat every one of those as tempered until proven otherwise.

The test scrape, exactly as it should be run

Pick a spot nobody looks at: the bottom corner of the pane, an inch in from the frame. Flood the glass with water and keep it flooded, because dry scraping is the fastest way to ruin a window. Use a brand-new blade, retired the moment it nicks or feels gritty. Hold it low, around 30 degrees, and make one four-inch pass in a single direction. Never back-drag — the return stroke rides over the debris you just freed. Squeegee that patch, get your eye close, and inspect it in raking light and again from inside against a dark background. Any hairline, any faint white streak, and that pane is finished: no blade touches it again, ever. Run this on every tempered pane, not once per house. Debris is a per-lite condition, and two panes hung in the same opening can behave completely differently.

The part that costs us money to say

On a new build with mortar splatter, stucco slurry, or paint overspray baked onto tempered glass, the safe answer is sometimes that we do not scrape it — which means we leave the pane imperfect, quote less work, or turn the job down. If the house is inside the builder's first-year workmanship warranty, that construction clean is the builder's obligation. Make the GC or glazier handle it instead of paying us. We are not going to take a fee, hit fabricating debris on a $900 great-room panel, and hand you a signed waiver as the remedy. A waiver protects the cleaner, not your glass. Most routine cleaning needs no blade at all: 100% pure deionized water and a soft brush lift valley dust, pollen, and sprinkler film with nothing hard touching the surface. Interior glass and ordinary annealed windows are fine to do yourself with a plastic scraper and warm water.

A scratch in tempered glass does not come back out

Cerium oxide polishing works on annealed glass. On a tempered pane it is a bad trade twice over: friction heat and material removal both work against a surface holding 10,000-plus psi of compression, and even a technically successful polish leaves a shallow lens of optical distortion you will notice every time light rakes across it. Most glass shops decline the work outright. That leaves replacement. In the Treasure Valley a tempered patio-door panel commonly runs $250 to $600 installed, and a large great-room or stairwell panel often lands between $600 and $1,200 or higher. Every one is a special order, because tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or trimmed after the furnace — the dimensions are final the moment it is heat-treated, so lead times run one to three weeks. That gap between $0 and $1,200 is the entire argument for the two minutes a test scrape costs.
