The short answer: wildfire ash is not soft. It carries quartz dust and silica from burned grasses that are as hard as or harder than window glass, and a dry cloth traps those grains and drags them. That is a cut, not a smear. Flood the glass with water before anything touches it.
Soda-lime window glass sits at about 5.5 on the Mohs scale, roughly 500 Knoop. Pure wood ash is mostly calcium carbonate at Mohs 3, and on its own it would never mark a window. The problem is that wildfire ash never arrives pure. Mixed into it is unburned mineral soil, quartz dust at Mohs 7, feldspar around 6, and opaline silica phytoliths from burned grasses that run 5.5 to 6.5. Any one of those is at or above the hardness of your glass. A dry cloth does not lift a hard grain. It captures it and drags it, and the entire force of your hand concentrates on the single contact point under that particle. Instead of sliding, the grain plows. That plow track is a scratch. It is cut into the glass, it is permanent, and it usually shows up as fine arcs matching the path your hand took.
Smoke and ash are two different problems that arrive together. The smoke you see in the air is mostly PM2.5, particles under 2.5 microns, and it deposits as a greasy tar-and-carbon film. That film is ugly but it is soft. The scratching comes from the coarse fraction: grit in the roughly 50 to 500 micron range that falls out when a plume drops into the valley. Idaho rangeland fires burn cheatgrass, bunchgrass and sagebrush, and grasses concentrate silica in their tissue as phytoliths, so rangeland ash is meaningfully harder than ash out of a clean fireplace. Add the valley's own loess and farm dust, which is already sitting on your glass before the smoke ever shows up, and every August wipe-down is a mix of soft soot and hard sand. The soot is what you see. The sand is what does the damage.
Dry ash sitting on a window is doing no chemical damage. Wet ash is. Fire converts plant potassium and calcium into carbonates and hydroxides, so fresh wood-ash slurry commonly measures pH 10 to 12. Above roughly pH 9, hydroxide ions begin stripping sodium out of soda-lime glass and breaking apart the silica network. That is the same corrosion that turns hard water film into etched glass, running faster. What triggers it here is usually not rain. It is sprinkler overspray, overnight dew, and the late-August thunderstorm that wets ash without enough volume to rinse it away. A pane that takes a dew cycle every night with ash still on it is under mild chemical attack every night. This is the real argument for dealing with ash in days rather than waiting out the season, and it is separate from the scratch risk.
Non-contact first, contact last. Step one, blow it off. A leaf blower at glass feels reckless, but it never touches the surface, and it clears the bulk of a dry ash load with zero abrasion risk. Step two, flood. Garden hose, top down, open flow rather than a jet nozzle, and let it run a genuine 60 seconds per pane. You are not rinsing, you are floating grit off so nothing hard is left waiting under the cloth. Do this before the sun reaches the wall: south-facing glass here runs 130 to 150 degrees F on an August afternoon, and water that flashes off just concentrates minerals in place. Step three, and only now, touch the glass, with the surface still visibly running wet. If you ever feel grit under the cloth, stop and re-flood. A wet particle rolls. A dry particle cuts.

A hose rinse costs you nothing and protects the glass, and a full cleaning during an active smoke event gets reloaded inside a week. No. Microfiber is excellent at trapping particles, which is exactly the problem here. It holds the hard quartz and silica grains in the ash against the glass while you push. Dry paper towel and newspaper are worse. There is no dry method that is safe on contact, including a dry squeegee. If you want a dry option, use a leaf blower, because it removes ash without ever touching the surface.
A garden hose does this job, so the pressure washer is unnecessary risk. If one is already out, stay above 3 feet with a 40-degree tip, keep it under about 1,200 PSI at the glass, and never aim into the perimeter seal or the frame drainage. Concentrated water at close range drives past failed or aging insulated-glass seals and forces water into the unit, and that damage costs far more than the cleaning saved.
