Almost all window film sits on the room side of the glass, and the coating you touch is far softer than the glass under it. So: no ammonia, no razor blades, no abrasive pads, and nothing at all for the first 30 days. Water, a drop of soap, a soft squeegee, done.
Aftermarket window film is a sheet of polyester, usually 1.5 to 2 mil thick for solar film and 4 to 8 mil for security film, bonded to the interior face of the glass with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. The surface you actually touch is not the polyester. It is a scratch-resistant hardcoat only a few microns deep. Glass tests around 9H on the pencil hardness scale. That hardcoat tests roughly 2H to 4H. Every tool a window cleaner is allowed to use on bare glass, a razor, 0000 steel wool, a white scrub pad, will cut or haze film on the first pass, and none of it comes back out. So the rules invert on a filmed window. The outside gets normal, aggressive cleaning, because it is still just glass. The inside gets water, a mild surfactant only if there is grease, a nick-free squeegee or microfiber, and nothing else.
Before changing anything, find out what you have. Body-tinted glass is bronze, gray, or green all the way through and is simply glass; clean it like any other pane. Aftermarket film is a separate layer, and a separate layer has an edge. From inside, run a fingernail around the perimeter about an eighth of an inch off the gasket. Installers leave a light gap of roughly 1/16 inch, so your nail catches a distinct step. Body-tinted glass has no step. The third case is the one that catches people: a surface-4 low-E coating applied to the exposed room side of the inner pane. At night, hold a penlight at an angle to a double pane and count reflections. There are four. If the one nearest you is a different color than the other three, that coating is exposed and it gets the same no-abrasives handling as film.
New film has to cure. The mounting adhesive goes on wet and the remaining moisture evaporates out through the polyester over weeks. For the first 30 days, do not clean the glass, do not press on it, and do not try to squeegee out the small water pockets or the slight milky haze you will see. Both are normal and both dry out on their own. Film installed in November or December, with low sun and short days, needs closer to 60. Temperature matters after curing, too. Clean when the glass itself is between roughly 40 and 90 degrees. A west-facing pane on a Meridian July afternoon runs 130 to 150 degrees at the surface, hot enough that solution flashes off before the squeegee arrives and you finish by dragging a dry blade across a soft coating. Do that elevation in the morning instead.
Mix it weak. A quarter teaspoon of dish soap per gallon of water is plenty; the soap is there for lubricity and to cut cooking grease, not to do the cleaning. Wet the pane generously and let it dwell 30 seconds. You are dissolving soil, not scrubbing it. Work anything stubborn with a wet microfiber and finger pressure, never a pad. Squeegee with fresh rubber that you have run a thumb along first, because one nick drags a hard point across the hardcoat for the full length of the pull. Come down from the top, and stop the blade about a half inch short of the film edge on all four sides. Detail that perimeter with a damp microfiber folded over a finger. Never run a blade, scraper, or squeegee corner into the light gap. That gap is exactly where film gets levered up, and once an edge lifts it keeps going.
Ammonia is the big one. It wicks into the light gap and attacks the mounting adhesive, and on dyed film it accelerates fading. Most manufacturers void the warranty over it, so blue ammonia glass cleaner is out. Melamine foam erasers are also out: that foam is an abrasive in the 3,000 to 5,000 grit range and it will permanently dull a hardcoat. So are bristle brushes, scouring pads, scrapers, and paper towels, which are wood fiber and micro-scratch soft coatings over repeated use. Then the honest list of things cleaning will never fix. Purple or bronze film is UV dye failure. Silvery haze between film and glass, or bubbles appearing long after the cure window, is adhesive failure. Scratches in the hardcoat are permanent, and polishing them removes more hardcoat and makes the spot worse. All four mean replacement, not cleaning, and no company should tell you otherwise.
Interior cleaning of filmed glass is the easiest window work there is, and if your film is intact you should not be paying for it. An interior pane carries dust, fingerprints, and dog nose, nothing more. A spray bottle, a gallon of water with a few drops of soap, and two microfibers handles a whole house in an afternoon, twice a year. Hiring makes sense for the outside: irrigation overspray and hard water, second-story glass, and screens. Reflekt cleans with 100 percent pure deionized water and no soap, which suits film well because there is no ammonia and no residue left behind, but DI water alone will not cut a greasy kitchen-side pane, and we will say so rather than scrub it. We also will not put a razor on a filmed window. If a company offers to, or sells tint-safe cleaning as a paid upgrade rather than the default, that tells you something.

No. Ammonia wicks into the small gap at the film's edge and attacks the mounting adhesive, and on dyed film it speeds up fading toward purple. Nearly every film manufacturer voids the warranty over ammonia use. Water with a quarter teaspoon of dish soap per gallon, or any cleaner explicitly labeled ammonia-free, does the same job with no risk.

Neither is a cleaning problem. Purple or bronze color is UV breakdown of the dye layer, and bubbles or silvery haze appearing well after the 30-day cure are adhesive failure. Both mean the film is at end of life. Plan on removal and replacement, usually 30 to 60 minutes per window to steam and scrape the old adhesive off, then roughly $7 to $12 per square foot installed, which lands near $100 to $180 for a typical window.

Usually yes. Residential film is applied to the interior face, so the exterior is ordinary glass and takes normal cleaning, including scraping where the glass allows it. Two exceptions: exterior-applied film, which is uncommon but used where interior access is impossible, and self-cleaning or exposed coated glass. Check the outside edge for a film step before any blade touches it. In the Treasure Valley, that exterior face is also where irrigation hard water actually collects.
