Why Nicol-farwell Windows Spot

Two separate water supplies reach a Caldwell window and both of them are hard. The first is Caldwell's groundwater supply, which is hard enough that most households here see scale on fixtures long before they notice it on glass. The second, and the one that actually does the damage, is the Caldwell Municipal Irrigation District, with storage held by Pioneer Irrigation District — untreated surface water delivered to the sprinklers, carrying suspended silt and dissolved calcium and magnesium straight off the canal. When a head clips a pane the water sheets, evaporates fast in the valley's dry air, and leaves the silt as a gritty film and the mineral as a bonded ring. Soap moves the first around and does nothing to the second. The same company should be able to do both, but not with the same method — one is careful hand work around failing glazing putty, the other is pole work and mineral removal. Frames, Tracks, Sills and Screens

Most of what makes a window look bad is not the glass. Silt runs off the pane into the bottom track and compacts; the exterior sill collects the same material plus whatever the wind brings; and the screen in front is a filter that has been filtering all season. Clean the glass alone and the window still looks wrong. We detail track and sill as part of the service, and we stay off the seal line with anything high-pressure or metal.

Sprinkler Aim Is Half the Answer

Cleaning without changing the cause buys one season. On a Nicol-farwell lot it is almost never every head that is the problem — it is two or three throwing onto glass, and a quarter turn on each does more for the next six months than the cleaning itself. Screens Are the Usual Culprit

A screen is a filter and it has been doing its job all summer. Silt dries in the weave and greys the whole view, so a perfectly clean pane behind a loaded screen still looks dirty. We would rather you added screens to the booking than paid for a window clean and felt it had not worked.
