Why Owyhee Village Windows Spot

The mineral on Owyhee Village glass does not come from the sky. It comes from the Caldwell Municipal Irrigation District, with storage held by Pioneer Irrigation District, which delivers untreated surface water to the sprinklers on a separate line, and it is compounded by Caldwell's groundwater supply, which is hard enough that most households here see scale on fixtures long before they notice it on glass. Every irrigation cycle that reaches a window deposits a little silt and a little dissolved mineral, and every evaporation concentrates what is already there. Over a season it bonds; past that it begins to etch the glass itself. This is why an ordinary wash looks fine on the day and hazy again within weeks — the deposit was never removed, only wetted. Deionized water dissolves it rather than redistributing it.

Older Glass Needs a Gentler Hand

Owyhee Village predates most of the city around it, and the glass reflects that. Homes of this era often still carry single-pane units, wood or early aluminum frames, and in some cases the original float glass, which is softer and scratches more readily than anything made recently. Some still have storms over the primaries. None of that is a problem — it makes this hand work rather than production work. No blade on old glass without testing a corner, and no water forced into failing wood putty.

Indian Creek, the Old Grid and the New Edge

Caldwell is one of the few cities in the valley that runs its own irrigation district — the Caldwell Municipal Irrigation District delivers untreated surface water to yards across town, and a lot of the older grid is still on gravity rather than pressure. What reaches the glass is canal water either way. Caldwell is really two cleaning problems wearing one city's name. The old grid around Indian Creek and downtown is pre-war and early-post-war housing: original wood sashes in places, single-pane and storm windows, mature trees dropping sap and tannin, and gravity irrigation running in ditches rather than pressurised pipe. The newer subdivisions on the south and west edges are production builds from the last twenty years with big rear glass packages, tight lots and pressurised sprinklers throwing canal water directly onto the windows. The same company should be able to do both, but not with the same method — one is careful hand work around failing glazing putty, the other is pole work and mineral removal. Height, Ladders and Poles

Floor plans in Owyhee Village keep most glass within one or two stories, with the taller panes generally on the rear elevation. Upper glass comes off the ground with poles and pure water wherever it can. That keeps ladders off soft ground and out of beds — most of the damage a window cleaner does to a property is done by ladder feet, not by anything on the glass. The Parts That Are Not the Glass

Most of what makes a window look bad is not the glass.
