Old Town is the one square mile of Meridian that predates the vinyl. The bungalows on the blocks between Pine, Carlton and Idaho still wear their original wood double-hung sash, true divided lites and summer storm windows, glass that needs a hand and a putty-safe touch, not a production pole run down the street.
Everywhere else in Meridian, a two-story vinyl tract home gets cleaned fast off a water-fed pole from the driveway. Old Town does not work that way. The bungalows and cottages here were glazed between roughly 1905 and the 1940s, which means wood double-hung sash held together with glazing putty, a meeting rail in the middle, and single-pane glass set in wood muntins. That putty goes brittle with age, and blasting an old sash with high flow can drive water past a failing bead and into the frame. We clean these by hand off a ladder or a short pole at low pressure, dry the wood sills and the putty line, and keep water out of the joints. Two things on an Old Town window turn one pane into ten. First, true divided lites.
