Nineties custom builders in Riverwoods did not build simple gable boxes. On a 2,400- to 3,700-square-foot house you typically get four to six roof planes, a couple of dormers over the front elevation, and two or three valleys — and every valley funnels the debris off two roof faces into one short stretch of gutter, usually above the entry or the garage. That is where the plug forms, not evenly along the whole run. A lot of these lots run the downspout tail underground and discharge it toward the pond or the greenbelt side rather than a splash block, because nobody wanted a downspout dumping onto a landscaped shoreline. Those buried lines silt up, and once they do the gutter backs up no matter how clean you got the top. We flush every downspout with a hose after clearing and watch for flow at the outlet. If the underground line is plugged, you will hear about it from us — that is a separate repair, not a gutter clean.
Wait for the next real rain and walk the outside of the house. If water is sheeting over the front lip of the gutter, or you see a dirt drip line in the mulch directly under the trough, you have a clog. If water is running out the downspouts and nothing is spilling over, you can wait — even if you can see debris from the ground. A sediment layer of shingle grit in the bottom of the trough is normal on a thirty-year-old roof and does not block flow on its own. And if a run is visibly sagging in the middle, cleaning will not fix that. That is a hanger or fascia problem, and we will say so instead of selling you a cleaning that changes nothing.

We flush it and tell you what we find, but we do not dig or jet buried drain lines. Plenty of Riverwoods lots run the tail underground so it does not dump on the shoreline landscaping, and after twenty-plus years those lines silt in. If the water backs up at the outlet instead of running out, the trough is not your problem and a gutter cleaning will not fix it.
