The mature canopy along Cleveland Boulevard between 10th and 18th is the reason gutter work here is different from the rest of Caldwell. Steep 1890-to-1950 rooflines, dormers and porch roofs on their own short gutter runs, and downspouts that disappear into century-old buried tile instead of splashing onto the lawn.
A 1960s ranch two miles from here has one long, low-pitch run of roof feeding one long gutter, and debris spreads out over the whole trough. That is not how these houses shed. Queen Anne, Craftsman and Tudor roofs in this district run steep, cut up with gables, dormers, turrets and hip returns, and every one of those creates a valley. Steep pitch means leaves do not sit on the roof — they slide fast and pile into the valley outlets and the two or three feet of gutter directly below each valley. So the trough can look clean from the driveway while the section under a valley is packed solid. Porch roofs are their own problem: a wraparound porch usually carries a short separate gutter with one downspout, and that little run fills years faster than the main eave above it.
Most Caldwell gutter calls come in October. Under these elms, silver maples and sycamores the spring drop is the one that actually plugs things. Elm seed comes off in May as flat papery discs by the thousand, maple samaras follow, and both are small enough to slide straight through a gutter guard and mat down into a wet felt in the bottom of the trough. Original half-round and built-in box gutters make it harder still, because the outlet is often a round drop tube smaller than a modern 2x3, and it is set behind trim where you cannot see it. Narrow side yards and rear-alley detached garages mean some spouts have to be worked from the alley side. We flush every spout and tell you which ones actually drain.
Worth checking before you pay anyone. Go out during a steady rain and watch the bottom of each downspout. If water is running out the bottom at a decent volume and nothing is spilling over the front edge of the gutter, the system is moving water and it can wait. Grit and shingle granules in the bottom of the trough are normal wear, not a clog. Two things that mean call now regardless of season: water sheeting over the front lip in a light rain, or a downspout that is dry at the bottom while the gutter above it is full — that is a plugged spout or a blocked buried line, and it is soaking the fascia every time it rains. Also honest: dark vertical streaks on the outside face of the gutter are oxidized aluminum and dirt, and cleaning the inside will not remove them.

Twice a year for most houses in this district — once after the May and June seed drop from the elms and maples, once after leaf fall in late October or November. A house with no limbs overhanging the roof can usually run on one visit. If you are only doing one a year under a full canopy, the trough is sitting packed through the whole watering season, which is when standing water gets into old fascia.
