What the Foothills actually pack into your mesh

June is cottonwood season along the creek corridors at the bottom of the Foothills, and the fluff does not land on a screen, it hooks into it. A window screen is a filter your house never changes. Every seed hair, every grass and juniper pollen grain, every speck of decomposed granite coming down off the Boise Front catches on the outside face and stays. On the older streets under mature canopy it packs in as a soft gray felt of pollen and leaf dust. On the newer view lots higher up, with no shade and open hillside or an active build next door, it is dry sharp grit and construction dust that will scratch mesh and glass if anyone wipes it dry. Most people notice it as a haze that will not wipe off the window, because it was never on the window.

Old frames do not get flexed

Not every screen up here is new. The lower Foothills streets still have plenty of original mid-century aluminum: thin roll-formed frames held together by four plastic corner keys that have been baking in the sun for sixty years. Those keys go brittle, and the frame is only as strong as they are. We flex-test a corner before a screen comes out of its opening, and if the frame is already loose or the spline has gone hard and cracked, you hear about it before we pull it, not after. Fragile ones get washed flat on a padded surface and never get stood up or leaned. A few are honestly past the point where washing does anything and would be better rescreened, and we will say so. Better to leave a screen in the window than hand you back four pieces of aluminum.

How we wash them

Screens come out, get labeled by opening, and go back into the same window they came from. Screens are not interchangeable even when they look identical, and a frame that has sat in one opening for decades has usually taken that opening's shape. We wash the mesh from both faces so the packed-in pollen and grit gets pushed back out the way it came in, then clean the frame channel and the corners, which is where cottonwood cakes hardest. The final rinse is the same 100% pure deionized water we use on glass, no soap, so nothing dries as a film that grabs the next round of dust. Screens go back in dry. When we are doing windows the same visit, screens come out first so we are not cleaning glass through a dirty screen and then reinstalling the problem.

When your screens do not actually need it

Worth checking before you pay for anything. Hold a sheet of white paper behind the mesh in daylight, or shine a light through it from outside at night. Clean mesh reads bright and even. Loaded mesh reads gray and blotchy, heaviest across the bottom third where fluff and pollen settle. Second thing worth knowing: charcoal fiberglass mesh fades and goes chalky after enough Foothills sun, and that is UV damage, not dirt. Washing will not bring the color back. If your screens look tired but light still passes through them evenly, you have faded screens rather than dirty ones, and cleaning them buys you very little. We would rather tell you that while we are quoting than after you have paid for it.
