Fifty years of canopy, and what it drops

Quarter-acre lots planted out five decades ago mean full mature canopy over almost every house here, and shade cuts both ways. Less direct sun means mineral spotting does not bake onto glass as hard as it does on an open south-facing estate lot. But the organic load is much heavier: leaf fragments, seed, and aphid honeydew misting down through the summer from the canopy overhead. Honeydew is sugar, so it does dissolve — but while it is there it glues everything else to the weave, and a screen in shade dries slowly enough to grow a green film on top of that.

Original aluminum frames set the limits

A lot of these houses still have the aluminum screen frames that came with them, and frames of that age bend easily. A bent frame will not reseat in its opening, which turns a cleaning into a replacement conversation nobody wanted. So screens come out labeled and go back into the exact opening they left, and anything with a corner key already failing gets flagged rather than forced. Where a frame is too brittle to pull safely we clean it in place and tell you, rather than handing you a broken panel and an explanation afterward.

Organic buildup under fifty years of canopy

Honeydew is the one that matters — it is sugar, so it dissolves, but it also glues everything else to the weave until it does. We wash screens individually with pure water and no soap rather than pressure-rinsing them in place, which on fifty-year-old mesh is how you end up with a bulged panel that no longer sits flat in its opening.

Pricing, and an honest note about older screens

Screens are $50 added to a window service and free once a year on any membership. The honest part: on a house where the mesh is original, a cleaning restores airflow and daylight but it will not make fifty-year-old mesh look new, and we would rather set that expectation now than have you disappointed. If a panel is already stretched and baggy in the frame, cleaning it is money better spent on rescreening that one opening — we will point that out when we see it instead of washing it and saying nothing.
