Most of Boise Heights sits above the canal line, so the yards up here run on treated city water instead of a pressurized irrigation share. It still leaves scale. On these side-hill lots off Curling Drive and Sunset Peak Road, heads get aimed uphill and the spray lands on glass.
The gravity canals that feed pressurized irrigation across the valley run below this hillside. Most of Boise Heights sits above that grade, so when your sprinklers come on you are almost certainly throwing treated city water on the lawn, not a canal share off the New York or the Ridenbaugh. That matters for glass. Canal water shows up as visible silt you can rinse off, which is annoying but sits on top. City water here goes on looking clean and leaves behind the part you cannot rinse: dissolved calcium and magnesium that stay put when the droplet evaporates. Same mineral that films your shower door, except on a west-facing window in July it dries in minutes and bakes on. On a flat Meridian lot you set heads at the bed edge and throw away from the wall. You cannot do that here. These lots are terraced, the usable lawn is often a narrow strip, and water runs downhill before it soaks in, so almost every system in Boise Heights ends up over-corrected: heads pushed tight to the foundation and canted uphill so the top of the slope gets its share. The spray fans back across the wall on the way past. Two elevations take the worst of it. First, the uphill side, where the bed pinches down to a foot or two and the head sits basically under the window. Second, the downhill walkout level, where a window that reads as a basement from the street is at lawn height out back. Street-front picture windows often look fine while the back of the house is chalked.
The old grid up here has no HOA and no common landscaping, which means no shared timer, no shared design, and no shared install date. A 1930s bungalow on Curling Drive got its irrigation retrofitted into beds that already existed, so the heads sit wherever there was room, usually against the house. The infill build next door had its system drawn with the plans and set back properly, but it also runs fixed glass down close to grade. So you get two houses on one street with completely different etching. We have worked lots a hundred yards apart where one had a light film that came off in a single pass and the other had years of buildup ghosted into the bottom third of every pane. Do not judge your glass by what the neighbors' looks like. It tells you nothing up here.
Do this before you call anyone. Wet the stained area with a hose and look at it while it is still wet. If the cloudiness disappears under the water and comes back as it dries, the mineral is sitting on the surface and it will come off. That is a cleaning job. If it stays visible while the glass is wet, the mineral has bitten into the surface and you are looking at etching, which is restoration, not a wash. Second test: drag a fingernail across it. If you feel it catch, that is depth. The honest part is that light and moderate etching polishes out and the pane goes back to clear, while deep etching, the frosted band on a window hit by the same head every morning for ten years, improves but does not always go fully clear. Test it before you book anything. Spray the area with a hose and watch it while wet. If the haze vanishes under the water and returns as it dries, it is surface mineral and a proper wash removes it. If it is still visible while the glass is wet, it has etched into the surface and needs restoration instead. A band across the bottom third is the classic sprinkler signature up here.
