The low winter sun that rakes across a Bench picture window in January is the most honest window inspector in Boise. It finds the wood-stove haze, the forced-air dust and the hand prints on the inside of the glass, the film that no amount of exterior work will ever touch.
Interior film is generated indoors, and Boise generates more of it than the rest of the valley. December through February the inversion parks wood smoke and PM2.5 over the bowl, because the city sits at the low point of a partially enclosed valley, and any house running a fireplace or wood stove lays a fine gray haze on the inside of the glass. Forced-air registers push drywall and carpet dust to the sills. Cooking oil travels further than people expect; a slider two rooms from the range still comes back yellow on a white towel. Add dog noses at patio doors, kids at bay windows and remodel dust in the older stock, and you get a soft, even film that reads as clean right up until the low January sun hits a Depot Bench picture window edge to edge.
Boise is the only city in Ada County where a normal Tuesday means cleaning hundred-year-old glass. A pane is one piece of glass, so a North End sash with true divided lites takes considerably longer than a single large fixed unit of the same overall size in Barber Valley, and it prices accordingly.
