Come the second week of June, the cottonwood standing through Veterans Memorial State Park and along the river drops enough seed that your screens grow a felt coat and the downspout outlets choke. Black cottonwood lines the Boise River and stands all through Veterans Memorial State Park, and for roughly two to three weeks in late May and June it throws seed fluff nonstop. On the dry bench that fluff blows through and keeps moving. Here it does not. Between the river, the park pond and lawns getting watered every morning, the air stays damp enough that the fluff settles and felts instead of drifting off. It blinds screen mesh until the screen barely breathes, mats down inside a K-style gutter into a soggy plug right over the outlet, and glues itself to any pane carrying sprinkler mist. After it stops, usually the last week of June. Pull screens in the middle of the drop and they will be furred over again inside three days, so you end up paying twice.
