Bird Droppings on Glass and Paint

Bird droppings look like a nuisance and behave like a mild acid. Left on glass or paint through hot weather they do genuine and permanent damage, which puts them in a different category from ordinary dirt.

Why they are corrosive

Droppings are acidic and contain uric acid along with grit. As they dry and heat in sun, the acid concentrates and attacks the surface beneath. On paint that means etched, dulled patches. On glass it can leave a permanent shadow where the surface has been chemically attacked, particularly on older or coated glass.

The grit problem

Droppings frequently contain seed husks, sand and gravel from a bird crop. Wiping a dried dropping off dry drags that grit across the surface, which is a straightforward way to scratch glass or paint while trying to clean it. Softening with water first is not optional.

Time matters more than technique

A dropping removed within a day or two usually leaves nothing. One left on a south-facing pane through a hot August week can leave a mark that does not come out. If you notice them and cannot deal with them promptly, wetting them down is better than nothing.

Where they concentrate

Under eaves, near feeders, below perching points on fences and wires, and on window sills beneath ledges. Where droppings recur in the same spot, dealing with the perch changes the outcome far more than cleaning more often does.

Common Questions

Still wondering about something? Call or text us at (208) 453-6760.

Do bird droppings damage windows?

They can. They are acidic and, left through hot weather, chemically attack glass and paint, leaving permanent marks.

How quickly should they be removed?

Within a day or two ideally. Prolonged heat is what turns a nuisance into permanent etching.

Can I wipe them off dry?

No. They contain grit that scratches glass and paint when dragged. Soften with water first.

Will a dropping mark come out?

If caught early, yes. Once the surface is etched, the mark is permanent.

How do I stop them recurring in one spot?

Address the perch above it. Removing the perching point changes the outcome more than cleaning more often.
