Tempering leaves microscopic surface imperfections. A blade catches these and drags them, producing fine permanent scratching that appears as a hazy band exactly where you scraped, and it looks worse than the overspray did. Critically, you cannot tell tempered glass by looking at it, and building codes put it in many residential locations: near doors, at low sills, in bathrooms and beside stairs.
Tempered panes carry a small etched mark, usually in a bottom corner, often hidden behind the frame or a screen. Finding it before any blade touches the glass is the basic professional step, and it is genuinely something a homeowner can check by removing the screen and looking closely at each corner. A scratch or a scraped haze band in glass is permanent. Unlike paint, which can sometimes be buffed or recoated, glass has no finish layer to restore, so a bad first attempt cannot be corrected by a better second one, only worked around by replacing the pane. If a contractor sprayed your windows, the remediation is reasonably their responsibility, and it is worth raising before you or they spend money on a fix, and worth confirming whoever does the work knows tempered glass and paint chemistry before they start.
