Sap behaves unlike anything else that lands on a window. It is a resin, not a soil, so water does nothing to it, and it hardens under UV until it is effectively a varnish bonded to the surface.
Sap is a mix of terpenes and resin acids that are not water soluble. Rinsing, however thoroughly, leaves it exactly as it was. Once sun has cured it for a few weeks it also cross-links and hardens, so an old sap spot is meaningfully harder to remove than a fresh one.
Hardened sap feels like it should chip off, and it partly does, taking a bit of whatever it is stuck to with it. On paint that lifts finish. On glass, dragging a blade or fingernail across a hardened bead is a straightforward way to scratch, and on tempered glass a blade can leave permanent marking.
Sap is softened with a solvent appropriate to the surface, given dwell time, and then lifted rather than scraped. The surface matters enormously: something safe on glass may strip a painted frame or haze a vinyl sill, which is why blanket advice from the internet causes damage.
Where a branch overhangs a window or a parking spot, sap will keep arriving. Pruning back is the durable answer. Where that is not possible, dealing with sap while it is fresh is far easier than removing a cured bead months later.
